Men seek psychological support for many different reasons. Sometimes there is a clear difficulty such as anxiety, stress, low mood, relationship problems or a major life change. At other times, it can be harder to put a finger on exactly what needs addressing — life may simply feel more overwhelming, frustrating, disconnected or difficult than it used to.
At Insightology, I provide evidence-based psychological therapy for men and adolescents aged 14+ from my practice in North Adelaide, as well as via Telehealth. My approach is collaborative, practical, and non-judgemental. Therapy provides an opportunity to better understand what is happening, develop useful ways of responding to difficulties, and work towards meaningful changes in everyday life.
Why Men Seek Therapy
There is no single way that men experience psychological difficulties. For some men, distress may involve anxiety, persistent worry or low mood. For others, it might appear as irritability, frustration, withdrawing from relationships, difficulty switching off, increased use of alcohol or other coping strategies, problems with motivation, or feeling constantly under pressure. Men may also seek therapy when there isn't a particular mental health diagnosis or crisis. Sometimes the goal is to work through a difficult period, understand recurring patterns, improve relationships, manage emotions more effectively, or gain greater clarity about where life is heading. Psychological therapy can provide a confidential space to make sense of these experiences and develop practical strategies for moving forward.

You don't need to know exactly how to describe what you're experiencing before coming to therapy. Part of the initial process is developing a clearer understanding of what has been happening and what you would like to discuss.
A Practical and Collaborative Approach to Therapy
I believe therapy works best when it feels like a collaborative process. Rather than applying the same approach to everyone, we work together to understand the difficulties you're experiencing, the patterns that may be maintaining them, and the changes that would be most useful to you. Depending on your needs, therapy may draw from evidence-based approaches including Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (CBT), Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT), Schema Therapy and Emotion Focused Therapy. For some people, therapy involves developing practical strategies and skills. For others, there may be value in understanding longstanding patterns, relationships, emotional experiences or the impact of earlier events. Often, it involves a combination of both.
Therapy Doesn't Have to Mean Having Everything Figured Out
Starting therapy can feel unfamiliar, particularly if you haven't spoken with a psychologist before.
You don't need to arrive knowing exactly what to say, why you feel the way you do, or what the solution should be. Early sessions are an opportunity for us to understand what has been happening, identify what matters most to you, and develop some direction for therapy together. My aim is to provide an environment that is respectful, straightforward and free from judgement, where difficult topics can be discussed at a pace that feels manageable.

About Ryan Eyre
I'm Ryan Eyre, a Registered Psychologist and the psychologist behind Insightology. I work with adolescents aged 14+ and adults across a broad range of psychological difficulties, and I have a particular interest in men's psychology and supporting men with their mental health and wellbeing. My therapeutic style is laid back, collaborative, respectful, and evidence-based. I aim to understand the person in front of me rather than simply focusing on a diagnosis, and to help clients develop greater understanding alongside practical strategies that can translate into everyday life.
